Position the Elevator Hinges and Drill Index Holes
Assembly: Empennage
Sub-Assembly:  Horizontal Stabilizer
Work Time: 2.5 hours

Built table supports/extentions to hold the elevator behind the HS.
*Very Important Step* Aligned the horizontal stabilizer with the elevator and marked the center and edges for hinge placement. Side-clamped hinges in place.
Checked the seperation to maintain elevator travel and edge margins for later riveting.
Aligned all hinges and drilled a single #30 hole in the center of each. Cleco'd and removed the side clamps.
Mounted the other hinge halves using the pins.

Cut the Elevator/Trim Tab Hinges to Size and Cut/Bend the Hinge Pins

Work Time: 1.75 hours

Measured and cut the hinges for the elevator and the trim tab after removing the pins and seperating the two halves. Filed all edges smooth in the grinder.
Cut and bent the hinge pins. Shaped the ends of the pins into small points to assist the rebuilding.

Trim the Trailing Edges of the Upper Skin

Removed all upper skin material that extended over the aft spar. Checked for waves and bows.

Rivet the Lower Skin to the Aft Spar

Riveted the lower skin trailing edge to aft spar while the assembly was still in the jig.
Removed the Horizontal Stabalizer from the jig and finished riveting the ends.

Rivet the Aft Spar to the Ribs

Riveted the aft spar to the main ribs using blind rivets.

Rivet the Left Skin to the Spar/Rib Assembly

Followed the same procedure used to rivet the right skin in place. Finished all rivets along Rib B that were common to both skins.

Rivet the Right Skin to the Spar/Rib Assembly

Started riveting of the right skin on the lower surface. Followed typical riveting patterns along the forward spar and then the ribs.
Riveted the upper skin to the forward spar while holding the skin back. Cleco'd the ribs and removed the aft spar to finish riveting.
Blind-riveted the nose ribs.

Check the Forward/Aft Attach Brackets for Clearance with Skin Cutouts

Cleco'd the aft spar to the rib assembly and fit the right skin in place. Then fit the left skin over the tongues of the aft attach bracket to check for clearance.
Also checked the forward attach bracket for clearance on the left skin cutout.
Removed all material from the skin that was connecting to the brackets.

Riveted all ribs onto the forward spar except A and B.

Installed the alignement pins through both doublers and the spar web, secured with the self-locking nuts.
Riveted the spar web doublers to the forward spar.

Fitted a forward spar cap into place and secured with clamps. Drilled all rivet holes.
Repeated process on the other cap.

Modify the Center Main Ribs

Removed the original flanges off of the two center ribs (A & B in the manual) and cut replacement flanges.
Drilled rivet holes in the rib tabs and aligned on the spar.
Reassembled the spars/ribs, aligned the replacement flanges, and drilled the center holes.
Cleco'd in place and drilled the rest of the rib/flange holes.

Checked rib flanges for squareness, straightened as needed with duckbill and fluting pliers.
Deburred edges and lightening holes.
Marked rivet lines on the nose ribs and spars.
